Preparing Your Agricultural Equipment for Winter
Even if you’re still in the process of harvesting your crops, you’re probably starting to prepare for winter. So are we. That’s why we here at Manor Home Center have put together some winterization tips for your agricultural equipment so you can prepare the right way! If you want to know more, or you want to see our inventory, contact our stores in Oakland, Maryland, serving Garrett County, today!
Owner’s Manual
For starters, read through your owner’s manual. It will have specific information and suggestions for your machine in particular, while our guide will be more general. If you can’t find your manual, the manufacturer’s website should have a copy you can print or download.
Engine
Engines in ag equipment are durable, but they aren’t built for cold environments. First, make sure your fuel tank cap and vent are working properly. Then look for signs of sediment or water in your fuel. If you find some, your fuel injector may need some maintenance.
If you’ll be using your equipment over the winter, you’ll need fuel that’s high-quality to keep it from separating or solidifying. You’ll also need to be extra on-top of things in terms of lubrication and motor oil. Your manual should have a more specific timeline for these operations.
Overheating
Cold weather doesn’t mean your equipment can’t overheat, so you’ll still need to pay close attention to your coolant and all related hoses. If your hoses are rubber, you should be especially attentive, since rubber can crack and break in extremely cold temperatures. Your coolant is vital in preventing corrosion, lubricating moving parts, and avoiding cavitation, so keep a close eye on that system.
Engine oil is also a big part of preventing an overheat. Make sure it’s the correct color and viscosity. If it’s thicker than normal or has dark flecks, you’ll want to replace the oil and the filter, both.
Battery
If you have equipment that relies on a battery, but you won’t be using the equipment over the winter, you’ll want to remove the battery entirely. Hook it to a trickle charger or tender to prevent it from losing its charge entirely, which will require a replacement. Keep it somewhere dry and warm and you’re good to go!
